ANSA and NATHALYN
"First Friends"

Ansa A. Thomas, 18, a college freshman of Brookdale College was my first friend in high school. I met her first day of school, sitting by herself at lunch. I asked politely to join her and ever since the first day, we agreed to meet at the same place every day. My sister also joined us after a couple of days and with the three of us, we became lunch buddies. We talked a lot and everything going on in my life, she knew about. As the year passed by, I had gained more friends and they had invited me to join their table. However, Ansa was too special of a lunch buddy that I could not help but refuse the offer.

Sophomore year, we shared the same Geometry and gym class. I sometimes helped her out with her problems in Geometry and in gym class, I often stop by her locker to see what was up. But the one thing that kept us together was the letters and the notes that we gave each other. We hardly had time to talk to each other so we had to communicate through other means. This letter writing continued even until junior year high school with no classes together. In every event of our life, we always remembered each other and in picking up the phone and talking, everything was back to normal. Every Christmas and birthday, there was always a gift to me from her and vice versa. And on my Sweet Sixteen, of course, Ansa was invited. Amidst it all, she gave me a poem written by her expressing how she felt about our friendship. I felt that among all the gifts she had given me, that poem was the most special.

Senior year was a hectic year for the both of us but we called each other up once in a while to keep in touch. I was proud of her and all her achievements. She went through 4 years of high school, struggling to do her best in school and letting her confidence shine through. She also helped encourage me when I felt like I was falling. Never did Ansa ever utter a negative remark about me. For that, I am thankful to her, my first friend in high school. She's someone so special and I hope she'll always know that.
